THE EFFECT OF TEACHER’S QUALIFICATION ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN PHYSICS
ABSTRACT
The
study examined the effect of teachers qualification on the performance of
students in Biology in Ondo West local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria.
Subjects for the study were one hundred and twenty (120) students were randomly
selected from five secondary schools in Ondo West local Government Area of Ondo
State. Questionnaires were used to collect relevant data for the study.
Percentages and chi-square were used to analyze the research questions.
Responses of Teachers showed that Teachers qualification and student’s
environment do not influence student’s poor performance but teacher’s methods
teaching influence poor academic performance. Student’s response on the other
hand showed that while teacher’s method of teaching and learning materials does
not.
The
implications of these findings for secondary school guidance counselors for
good academic performance were discussed.
CHAPTER ONE
The
poor scholastic achievement of students in Biology in Nigeria has been and still a source
of concern and research interest to the educators, government and parents. This
is so because of the great importance that education has on the national
development of the country. All over the country, there is a consensus of
opinion about the fallen standard of education in Nigeria. (Adebule, 2004) parents
and government are in total agreement that their huge investment on education
is not yield the desired dividend.
Poor academic performance is a
performance that is adjudged the examinee/testee and some others as falling
below an expected standard. Poor academic performance has been observed in
school subject’s especially Biology among the secondary school students.
Academic failure is not frosting to the students and parents, its effect are equally
grave on the society in terms of death of man power. In all spheres of the
economy and polities. Education at secondary school level is suppose to be the
bedrock and the foundation towards higher knowledge in tertiary institution.
It is an investment as well as an
instrument that can be used to achieve a more rapid economic, social and
political, technology, scientific and cultural development in the country.
The national policy on education is an
instrument for national development that fosters the worth and development of
the society and equality of education opportunity to all Nigerian children,
irrespectively of any real marginal disabilities.
The role of secondary school education
is to lay the foundation for further education and if a good foundation is laid
at this levels there are likely to be no problems at subsequent level. However,
different people at different times have passed the blame of poor performance
in secondary school to students because of their low retention, parent factors,
association with wrong peers low achievement motivation and the likes (Aremu
and Sokan, 2003). Falling level of academic achievement is attributable to
teacher’s non use of verbal reinforcement strategy, others found out that the
attitude of some teachers to their job is reflected in their poor attendance to
lessons, lateness to school, unsavory comments about students performance that
could damages their ego, poor method of teaching and the likes affect pupils
academic performance.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Since
it is generally believed that students’ academic performance depends in the way
the teacher teaches in the classroom, Soyibo ()1992) asserted that, no matter
how well groomed a teacher is using appropriate teaching strategies, unless
he/she has thorough knowledge of the subject matter his or her effort at
imparting knowledge to his/her students will be futilely. When a teacher come
late in class, this can affect the teaching of students because the teacher
will not be able to cover all the necessary parts in the study. some teachers
do not know how to make use of instructional materials when teaching. This
study seeks to find out the effect of teacher’s qualification on the
performance of the students in Biology.
RESEARCH
QUESTION
This
research will attempt to answer the following questions.
1. What
is the perception of teacher on students for poor performance and teacher’s
qualification?
2. What
is the teachers perception on student’s environment and student’s poor
performance?
3. What
is the effect of teachers on students poor academic performance and teachers
method to teaching?
RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
The
following hypothesis will be tested in this study which investigated the affect
of teacher qualification on the performance of students in Biology.
1. There
is no significant difference in the perception of teachers on student’s poor
performance and teacher’s qualification
2. There
is no significant difference in the perception of teachers on student’s
environment and student’s poor education.
3. there
is no significance difference in the perception of teacher effect on student’s
poor academic performance and teachers method of teaching.
DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The
scope of this study been delimited to randomly selected students in very few
secondary schools in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
One
hundred and twenty (120) students were used as respondent and the result was
tasted with chi-sqare statistics analysis, questionnaire as the instrument.
SIGNIFICANCE
OF THE STUDY
This
study is considered significant in the sense that it will generate sufficient
data for use to teachers and government that are concerned with the welfare of
students. Also, it is hopeful that the study will provide data on effects of
teachers qualification on the academic performance of the students.
DEFINITION
OF TERM
1. METHODOLOGY:
this is the means or strategies employed by teachers in attempt to impact
knowledge to the learners.
2. TEACHERS:
Is a person that impact knowledge on a students or a person whose job is
teaching.
3. POOR
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Is a performance that is adjudged by the examiner/tested
and some other significant as falling below an expected.
