attitudes and child’s behavior in selected Primary Schools in Akure South Local
Government Area of Ondo State. One hundred pupils (100) were used in the
research and data was collected through questionnaire. The questionnaire were
analysed and interpreted using simple percentages. Based on the result of the
research work, it was revealed that the parental attitude contributed to the
growth or development of the child, the way and manner which children are being
brought up at home and the attitude of the parents toward the child determine
the child’s behavioural outcomes. On the basis of the findings, it was
recommended that parent should serve as a good role model and great motivator
by showing good example to their childre, parent should have interest in the

INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
According to Oxford dictionary a
parent is a person’s father or mother, it can be either adoptive parent or
biological parent while attitude can be seen as the way people think and feel
about the way they behave towards their feeling of mind. The issue of child
rearing has become more challenging during the past few years and increasingly
greater expectations are leveled at educators and parents. Sheridan & Burt,
(2009), claimed that there has been a dramatic decrease in the tradition of
parental families while the proportion of single has increased. Ebbeck and Hoi
Yin (2009), explained that a number of working mother of young children has
risen over the past few decades, so has the use of child care.
Professionals defines good child
rearing and the kind of rearing that should be implemented inside the citizens’
homes, yet parents have the main responsibility for rearing their children,
even though today’s common discourse revealed how parents seem to carry
unreasonable load of guilt and consider themselves insufficient in their
rearing and parenting task.
Maljojoki (1989), explained that in
Nigeria work was valued as the most important thing in life, over family life
and free time in the 1970s. After the middle of the 1990s, the appreciations
have started to change considerably in the opposite direction. Aryee,
Shirinivas, & Hoon Tan (2005), explained that the value of upbringing is
unquestionable actually, it seems that the modern children would need parental
love and the safety provided at home maybe more than ever before, still, it is
worth remembering that a mother work increasingly outside home. Barnett, (2004) claimed that men have started
to use more and more time with home craft and childcare during the past decades.
These decisions concerning work family are not just about making compromises.
Uusiautti and Määttä, (2010) said that for example positive paternal
involvement influences positively the multiple domain of children’s lives from
birth through adolescence.
Abbot and Catalano (2008), explained
that in all children’s well-being, behavioural and health are developed within
the context of the family, Ambert, (1994), Sheridan & Burt, 2009), explained
that in today’s parenting world styles and strategies are based on the old age
question of nature versus nurture, If parents cannot affect the nature side of
the equation, then they will try to affect the nurture part by challenging the
way they raise their children, in order to increase their children’s succeeding
in society. Parents are always trying to find news way and techniques to build
the type of adult they want their children to become. They want their children
to be successful, caring and be accepted by the society. Parent go to such
lengths to make sure their children learnt certain lessons, perhaps it is
because many parents believe that to succeed in the society, certain behaviours
must be introduced to offspring in a timely manner.
Eisenberg, (1983), claimed that one
of the core societal values that parent should try to teach their children is
early on altruism, children are often encouraged to shared toys with siblings
and playmate and also share food with their parent during mealtimes, Eisenberg
further defined Altruistic by most psychologist as behaviour that is not
motivated by any external or internal reward. He further claimed that prosocial
behaviour is simply behaviour that benefit another being whether the motive is
selfish or altruistic/selfless most parents would like to encourage the type of
prosocial, behaviour in their children. However getting a child to behave
prosocially is challenge enough.
Adekeyi, (2002), observes that it is
family main effort and abilities that children are socialized to become
productive citizens. So, wherever parents possess the resources and skills,
they apply effectively and joyfully in raising their children
The entire society benefits, this brings
joy and pride to the nation, to encourages development and peaceful
co-existence. The children themselves feel good and bring happiness to their
parents and the whole community. In view of this, the parental attitude on a
child behaviour become indispensable factor in the wheel of progress, it is a
fact that parental background influences children performances either positively
or negatively. A well to do family will have positive interest in the education
of their children.
According to Ezewu, (2003), home
background affects children especially in respect to their academic
achievement, the primary function of family is the rearing and protection of
children and the value and belief of the society to them, they also teach
children the rules, traditions and ways of doing things. It is also the
responsibility of the parent, that provide the children with shelter, food,
education, security and personal development.
Statement of the Problem
The influence of parental attitude on
child’s behaviour has been a favourite topic to be investigated. It appears
that nowadays most parents seems not to be active and alive to their divine and
practical responsibilities of raising up their child.
Also some parent might endorse or
value the responsiveness to children, but have difficulty express those
feelings when child is misbehaving. As a result of this observation, the study focused
on parental attitude that determine child’s behaviour.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to
investigate the parental attitude that determine child’s behaviour in Akure
South Local Government Area of Ondo State. The objective of the study include:
·
Identifying the influence of parental
attitude as it affects the child behaviour.
·
Carrying out controlled study and investigation
in home environment and facilities in these homes for children’s educational
development with special references to the local government area.
·
Seeking to suggest the possible
solutions to the parental behavioural problem affecting child’s behavioural
attitude.
Significance of the study
This study will give the parent and
government the opportunity of knowing how to deal with problems arising from
home in relation to child behavioural attitude outside the home, the findings
would also be of benefit, to both teachers and guidance Counsellors in their
respective planning, for instance establishing a relationship between the
marital set up of home, parents and children relationship in the academic
performance of pupils. The study will go a long way to let all educational
stakeholder to be aware of the effect of parental attitude that determine
child’s behaviour.
Limitation of the Study
This
research is restricted to Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State. There are nine (9) primary schools
in this local government area. However, as a result of time, factor, financial
constraint, the researcher could not go round to all the primary schools in the
local government area to carry out the findings.
Consequently,
five (5) primary were sampled from different location within the local
government area, where the research beliefs could get authentic data for the
project.
Research Question
1. Which parental attitude result in the
best child’s outcomes?
2. How do negative/positive thought and
cognition hinder child’s development?
3. How can parent harmful attitudes be
modified?
